Keep your head down. Do what you're told. It's easier that way.
Walter Lawrence Baucom is used to the troops that patrol Agrarian District 89. He grew up with the sight of Chinese and Russian soldiers, right alongside the American ones. They are the Coalition. "The Three Brothers", they call themselves. They claim that they are there to help. And he thinks that if he doesn't rock the boat, then they will never have a reason to break in his door and disappear him, like they did to his brother.
But when a Chinese captain is kidnapped by resistance members, Walter is suddenly thrust into a fight he never wanted. A fight where there are many sides, but very few allies. As things in District 89 quickly spiral out of control and the borders are closed by Coalition troops, Walter will have to make a decision What is he willing to fight for?
His life? His freedom?
His family?

The Purge of District 89 A Grower's War, Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) D. J. Molles, Christian Rummel, Audible Studios Books Reviews
This is my first read of DJ Molles' work and I was happily surprised at how sucked in I got into this story. His characters have depth, and the world is eerily something I could picture our current future being. There are 2 sides to every story, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the resistance is up to in book 2 - Renegades.
This book definitely opened my eyes to a scary and yet very much possible future. I've read the Remaining Series and Wolves also by D.J. Molles and I absolutely loved those so I was confident that I would enjoy this one as well. But that would be an understatement. When I started reading the book I couldn't put it down. I absolutely can't wait for the next Growers War book to come out. The cliff hanger at the end is driving me nuts! I wanna know what happens so badly!!! Lol. Definitely should check out this book though. Guaranteed enjoyment.
I'm a serious fan of this author and "Wolves" was one of the best books I've ever read. This was a letdown coming off of that book. I've just started the second book in the series and hope it ramps the story up great. Don't get me wrong, the character development is still top notch but the story overall left me wanting. That said, I'm still giving it a four-star review - it doesn't suck by any means but Wolves, what I consider to be DJ's high-water mark, was WOW!!!
As a huge fan of The Remaining series, I knew I had to read this series as well. As always with DJ Molles books, I felt as if I was in the action right along with Walter. I love my dystopian societys and this book absolutely did not disappoint me. It was oppressive and Walt tried to be peaceful but eventually enough was enough and it was time to fight back. The action in this book was great and the characters really made you care about them.
I would recommend this book to literally anyone who likes a great read. I loved it!
As a huge fan of The Remaining and Wolves, I was thrilled when I heard about the Purge of District 89. Needless to say, I read it in a single day. DJ Molles has a way of inserting the reader in the action unlike pretty much any other author that I've read. His books are always well researched and bring a twist to the genre. In POD89 the reader is plunged into a dystopian society that feels chillingly realistic. It reminded me of Red Dawn and 1984, but POD89 is also unique with a small cast of compelling characters that you root for just like in The Remaining. I can't wait for book 2!
Looks like another good series from DJ Molles. I liked Molles after reading "The Remaining". This is a different take blending Post-Apocalypse with Dystopian genres. It starts off slowly, introducing the characters and building the world. We get bits and pieces and have to put the puzzle together. I like putting puzzles together. In the second half of the book it takes off running and hardly gives you a moment to breath until the surprising end. Dark but not hopeless, a little slow to start but a strong finish.
This is one of those times where I wish I didn't give out so many 5 star reviews, because it cheapens this 5 start review. Oddly enough, I thought I was going to dislike this book and put it down about 10% of the way in. It started slowly and seemed a bit choppy. But another reviewer said to stick with it and I did, thankfully. It's a top notch thriller, with strong anti-authoritarian undertones. America has been subjugated by a coalition of Russians, Americans, and Chinese, who determine what your job is, who you can marry, and whether you can have kids. Acts of rebellion are met with ferocious retribution. Against this backdrop, we are introduced to a fractured rebellion and how one powerless man finds his voice. DJ Molles is a cut above and I'm going to stop being so liberal with 5 star reviews and only give them to works like this.
Note If you haven't read the Remaining series, do so. Great stuf.
I loved The Remaining series so I went into this book with high hopes. At first the story was a bit slow and I began to worry, but trudged through anyway. I'm SO GLAD I did. I was rewarded for my perseverance, and in retrospect the slow beginning was pretty short. The book gets good when we meet the main character, Walter Lawrence Baucom. I like him. I like Lee Harden more, but Lee is my hero. Walt is my brother. In the future, our country is an oppressive dystopia. Walt wants to get along, like everyone else, until they take too much from him and he has to fight back. The story has heart and action. If you like The Remaining, you will like this. The author's writing style is fluid and easy to read. You can finish this book in a day if you neglect your chores.
